For us, we seem to have hit a stroke of bad luck.
On our last day in Bohol, we went on a snorkelling tour and decided to bring our “Waterproof” camera along. Back in Korea, we had our “Adventure Cam” which was basically an OLYMPUS 1030sw camera that was supposed to be for rough and tumble experiences with a waterproof certification for up to 10 Meters. However, on our Shark Diving adventure in Busan the camera leaked and the circuits were fried (but the tank was only 6 Meters from top to bottom). We called the Korean Repair Centre and they told us because we were over our 12 month warranty period, they would charge us more than the cost of the camera to repair it.
As we didn’t want to be without a video camera for our Islands of Adventure, we figured that we must have had a “bad apple” and we decided to give OLYMPUS another try. We bought the 850sw camera that was supposed to be a rugged camera which would be “waterproof up to 3 meters”.
Six days later, on our first week here in the Philippines we took our camera into water that was about 3 to 4 feet deep. Within minutes the camera was totally blacked out. We tried calling OLYMPUS and they told us that we could ship it to the United States to have it fixed in a few months. When we told them that this was the 2nd camera that had not lived up to it’s claims, they were basically like… yeah, so what? So we asked at the local camera repair centre in Cebu City if there was anything they could do, but they told us if they tried to repair it OLYMPUS would void our warranty. However, they did mention that this was the 3rd OLYMPUS “waterproof” camera that had been destroyed by water damage this month.
Needless to say, DO NOT BUY OLYMPUS PRODUCTS unless you happen to like malfunctioning equipment that doesn’t live up to its expectations and rude customer service agents who offer no help whatsoever.
On top of our Camera situation, our choice for Travel Insurance “World Nomads” informed us that we would not be covered by them because we had been out of Canada for more than 1 year. Better still, they said that although they could provide no service for us, they were not sure if they would be able to refund our money for the plan.
With a lot of phone conversations and e-mails we were finally able to get refunded for the policy but we are now left without any sort of insurance coverage.
Finally, the weather had taken a turn for the worse and we didn’t have enough time to explore much more of Cebu than the Industrial “Cebu City” which was well… industrial.
All that to say, not everyday is a barrel of laughs when you’re on the road, but hopefully things will change as we head off to our next destination of Puerto Princesa, in Palawan.

Not everyday is a vacation when you’re on the road.
